E.H. (Ted) Pope was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1926. After WWII, he trained as a tool and die maker at Modern Tool. Just as he was to get his journeymans’ papers, he decided to change careers. He went to work on the order desk at A.R. Williams, which was a large Toronto distributor of industrial machinery and supplies.

In 1951, he decided to start an industrial
distributorship, and called it Pope Supply Company. After a few years he became convinced that Manufacturers’ Representatives had a great future, and decided to phase out the distribution business. Soon the company was strictly a Manufacturers’ Representative, selling to distributors from coast to coast in Canada.

In 1964, the company was incorporated as Edward H. Pope Ltd. (EHPL). Eventually, Ted realized that to grow and prosper, the company would have to stock its products. Today the company warehouses virtually everything it sells.

In 1983 the company produced its first catalogue, conveniently grouping its suppliers’ most popular products into one book. In 1987 EHPL acquired a Macintosh computer, and began doing desktop publishing. Since then the company has produced catalogues, flyers and direct mail material both for in-house use and for the company’s customers. Distributors have greatly appreciated having sales material custom designed for them.

In 1986, after 35 years and seven locations in Toronto, a lot was purchased in Brampton and a custom-designed facility was built. EHPL moved into the new premises in December, and held a gala open house the following June.

In January 1996 EHPL’s catalogue became its Distributor Price Book, which was designed in-house. With this edition the catalogue was combined with prices and discounts to simplify product specifying by customers.

In June 2001 the company held a 50th Anniversary Open House. The Mayor of Brampton and President of the Board of Trade attended and presented plaques. It was a special honour when two of EHPL’s biggest customers presented plaques honouring the company’s contribution to their growth. Read about our 50th Anniversary Celebration - Click here
